Research acceleration: the view inside OpenAI

Simon Willison

OpenAI published its internal agent-usage curve, and the curve is the story — daily AI spend per researcher went from roughly nothing in February to about $600 by late August, with the inflection in late July when staff got GPT-6 Astra early. That is the shape of the line you will be arguing against in every budget conversation about agentic engineering for the next year.

AI & Agents

Anthropic Engineering

How we contain Claude across products

The clearest account going of how the three Claude surfaces differ in blast radius — gVisor containers on the web, OS-level sandboxing plus auto mode in Claude Code, a sealed VM with a credential-intercepting proxy for Cowork. Worth the archive trip for the failure list alone: config parsed before the trust prompt, exfiltration through domains that were already on the allowlist.

Engineering & Leadership

Serhii Yakovenko, LeadDev

We halved our continuous integration pipeline

An hour of CI became 22 minutes, then drifted back past 30 once AI-assisted development quadrupled merge volume, and three engineers spent six weeks getting it to 15 minutes at a 95% green rate. The generalizable part is not the fail-fast trick but the org one — pipeline speed regresses the moment your team's output changes shape, unless someone owns a number.

Antonija Bilić Arar, LeadDev

Engineers grieve a job that no longer exists

The people burning out are the early adopters, not the holdouts, because they have quietly become the only quality gate on everyone else's generated pull requests. A useful counter-metric for anyone reading adoption dashboards: review and validation time is invisible labor, and nothing in the dashboard is counting it.

Web & Product Craft

Austin Z. Henley

Making a Python interpreter in 1024 bytes

Variables, operator precedence, if/else, while, recursion and indentation-based blocks, all inside a kilobyte of C with no macros and nothing past libc. Loops work by seeking backwards and reparsing the source each time through, which is the sort of cheerful structural cheating that makes you reconsider how much machinery a small language really needs.

Simon Willison

The purpose of DNS is to spread scams

Interisle counted 85 million new generic-TLD registrations in 2025, 8.5 million of them already blocklisted by May, with informed estimates putting real abuse between one in ten and one in five. This is the arithmetic behind every filter that quietly distrusts a domain for the crime of being new.

New York & the Table

Katie Way, Hell Gate

Noise complaints are threatening the last steel panyard in Crown Heights

Pan in Motion rehearses in a high school parking lot with permits in hand and a bandleader who gives neighbors his personal number, and a single complaint could still cost them their run-up to Panorama. A precise little story about what a city gives up when the only sound it will tolerate is quiet.

Rossi Anastopoulo, King Arthur Baking

Why does my challah have stretch marks?

The tears running down a braid are almost always underproofing or braiding too tight — the loaf still has spring left when the oven sets the crust. Proof to the fingertip test rather than the clock, and leave the braid some slack to grow into.

Diversions

Riley MacLeod, Aftermath

Future? No Thanks! thinks the revolution is possible, but also pretty funny

Molleindustria drops you into a socialist Pittsburgh as an old man running errands on the last day before his scheduled death, and MacLeod's case is that it mocks the politics it believes in without knocking them over. A short, strange evening game that turns out to be about aging out of a movement you helped start.

Loose Change

Niko McCarty, Works in Progress

All the microbes you can't have

A 1976 industrial-chemicals law quietly treats engineered microbes as chemical substances, and the trigger for mandatory EPA review is DNA moved between genera — a boundary that nature itself crosses in roughly a third of sequenced microbial genomes, and that taxonomists have been known to redraw retroactively. So the bacterium that breaks down PET in a day instead of six weeks, and the one that detects cadmium at five parts per billion, stay in the lab while a human filing system decides what is allowed outdoors.

Wild opening salvo against Chelsea hints at exciting times for Arsenal fans

Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead after 77 seconds and it finished 2-1 to Arsenal, Havertz drifting in for the equaliser and Ødegaard finishing a move Havertz set up by simply dribbling his foot away. Ronay's read is that the control-versus-chaos frame everyone carried into Alonso's first big away day came out backwards, and that the wildness of the opening half-hour is good news for the whole league.

The Builder Series — founder, investor & operator night

To be announced (released to ticketholders)

Twenty-five dollars, food, and a room of operators rather than a panel. The venue arrives with the ticket, which is either a red flag or the whole charm.

Kwaidan — new 4K restoration

Film Forum, 209 W Houston St

Kobayashi's ghost anthology is three hours of hand-painted skies and slow dread, and it only really works at this size. Eighteen dollars, one train.

Itzhak Perlman: 2nd annual 80th birthday bash

Beacon Theatre, Broadway at 74th

A violinist who has been at it for six decades, playing eleven blocks from the front door. The second annual eightieth birthday is its own kind of joke.

Quote of the day

“CI speed needs an owner and a target, not a one-time fix.”
